![]() I learned a lot about ultralight backpacking, I didn't even know about it before. Lots of great inputs from everyone, thank you. Given that their ultra light bags don't have a stellar reputation for durability it doesn't seem worth it to shave just 1.3 lbs of weight. You could always go crazy light like a packable osprey or something with an f stop ICU inside?īe aware that the shoulder straps and waist belts can be terrible on many photo backpacks. Add in a ICU from China and for $200 you have killer pack. The best ones I've tried are the Gregory Targee models, the Osprey Kamber and Skarab lines, the Deuter Freerider Pro, and the Mammut Trion Pro. And since very few dedicated photo packs have solid support (FStop is probably the best), I find myself looking at real packs and converting them for photo use.Īlso, like you I've become a fan of rear opening packs for photo use. Given a choice between a light pack with average support and a pack with superb support that is a bit heavy, I'll take the latter every time. I hiked with two cameras and 3 zeiss lenses, so not super light gear. Pack probably weight closer to 4 lbs, but would have to look it up. ![]() Just got home yesterday and did about 14 miles in the Escalante. I have an Osprey Kamber 42 that I use for my photo bag. Now the packs you have listed are not light. It is a nice pack, but the Osprey factory reps told me 20lbs max as a capacity - otherwise there is no point going with this pack. Osprey just came out with a lightweight pack, called the Levity. So less compartments, zippers, buckles, torso adjustments, etc. "ultralight" packs omit a lot of features to keep the weight down. A really great company that specializes in lightweight packs, ULA. "ultralight" packs are generally no heavier than 2ish lbs, and you cannot expect it to carry much weight comfortably. I go with Zpacks cuben fiber bags and lenses/gear wrapped in neoprene inside. If they made an Ajna UL out of the Loka material it would be 1.32lbs lighter. The Ajna weighs 3.75 lbs and it has a volume of 40L. With f-stop bags, a Loka UL (ultra light) weighs 2.25 lbs, its volume is 37L. on my last trip to Costa Rica and in terms of its straps and waist belt it is one of the worst to hike with for any distance. is far less important than how it feels when you have your gear inside. you could always go crazy light like a packable osprey or something with an f stop ICU inside?īe aware that the shoulder straps and waist belts can be terrible on many photo backpacks. I know every gram helps when hiking but equally, compared to what you put in it, the weight difference between an ultralight and mid weight bag seemed like it wasn't too big for me. Almost bought the loka but for not too much extra weight you get a more robust bag. I had a flipside 400 AW and it was great but I just got an F-stop ajna. (24mm PCE, 50mm f1.4, 105 Macro, or 20mm f1.8G, 35mm f1.4, 300mm f4 PE.) I find the less stuff I bring, the more I enjoy the hike and the better my shots are. I rarely hike with more than three lenses. I don't use "regular" photo backpacks because the Osprey is so much more versatile. The Osprey is lightweight, has a mesh screen that keeps the pack off your back so it stays drys, has a built in rain cover, and you can add a 2 or 3 liter water system. Lenses are lightly wrapped in neoprene, camera normally carried in a lighweight pouch on a strap. I am looking for a bigger and lighter bag. Version II has more elegant features missing in version I, but v1 back zipper just works better. I think I like the 400AW (first version) more in the field, but it lacks space. I own a Lowepro flipside 400AW and also the 500AW II. ![]() ![]() I don't know if I like the Mindshift ultralight 36L due the lack of back zipper opening. Fair price on kickstarter but unfortunately very expansive and out of stock after kickstarter campaing. Shimoda designs seems to have done a decent job. Loka ultralight seems very well known, but feels like fragile for its price tag. Ok, what is the lightest 35 / 40L camera bag out there? ![]() Ultralight bags for hiking / trekking (f-stop Loka UL / Shimoda 40L / Mindshift / others?). ![]()
